Um effiziente und zeitgemäße Forschungsstrukturen zu schaffen, wurde im Jahr 2006 die Sektion Neurochirurgische Forschung unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Christel Herold-Mende eingeführt.

So gelang es, die Vielfalt an neurochirurgischen Forschungsschwerpunkten, die sowohl klinische als auch experimentelle Projekte von hohem internationalen Renomée umfassen, durch Schaffung und Nutzung gemeinsamer Infrastrukturen, durch regelmäßige Fortbildungsveranstaltungen wie auch durch die enge Interaktion von Mitarbeitern aus allen relevanten naturwissenschaftlichen
Fachbereichen zu einer zielgerichteten und ökonomischen Einheit zu bündeln.

Gerade in einem operativen Fach ist dies von größter Bedeutung, um die knappen zeitlichen Ressourcen optimal nutzen zu können.
